Tour champ suspended after testing positive (International Herald Tribune, 28 July)

FRANCE - Floyd Landis, whose remarkable march over the Alps in Stage 17 positioned him to win the Tour de France after his chances seemed bleak, tested positive after that stage for illegally high levels of testosterone. On Sunday, Landis became the third American cyclist to win the Tour. But three days later, his celebration ended when he learned that one of his urine samples showed an abnormal ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone. The sample was collected on the evening of Stage 17, the day Landis improbably climbed to 3rd place from 11th in one of the greatest performances in cycling history.

Iron Therapy Shows Promise Against Endometriosis (Forbes.com, 27 July)

BELGIUM - A treatment that eases iron overload could help women fight painful endometriosis, researchers report. Endometriosis is a disorder in which endometrial tissue develops outside the uterus, and attaches to ligaments and organs in the abdomen. The disease can cause bleeding, pain, inflammation, adhesions and infertility. Experts say up to 10 percent of women may be affected. In their study with mice, Belgian researchers concluded that an overload of iron in the pelvic cavity may help make these lesions grow by promoting the proliferation of their epithelial (lining) cells. This iron overload does not actually cause endometriosis, the study said.

Frequency of the metabolic syndrome in obese Spanish paediatric population

Marta López-Capapé, Milagros Alonso, Esmeralda Colino, Carmen Mustieles, José Corbatón and Raquel Barrio. Childhood obesity in Europe is on the increase, particularly in Spain. Obesity in both children and adults is associated with a group of metabolic disorders including dyslipidaemia, hypertension and glucose intolerance, which collectively form the metabolic syndrome (MS) - considered a risk factor for development of cardiovascular disease. One factor that is consistently implicated in the development of MS is insulin resistance (IR), which is strongly associated with obesity. Unlike MS in adults, there is currently no standard definition of paediatric MS because so little is known about its diagnostic criteria and prevalence. Although several studies have attempted to assess the prevalence of MS in paediatric populations, the inconsistent criteria adapted from adult diagnostic tools have produced discrepancies in the frequencies reported. Cross-country comparison is confounded by differences in population characteristics such as ethnic background, age and severity of obesity. Here López-Capapé and colleagues set out to establish the prevalence of MS in obese Spanish children and assess its common components in order to develop standardised criteria with which to diagnose the syndrome. Their findings suggest that the most important predictor of MS is IR, which is significantly associated with the prevalence of other MS disorders such as hypertension and impaired glucose metabolism. Importantly, IR is a good predictor of MS independent of age, ethnicity and severity of obesity, making it a key diagnostic component of MS. López-Capapé et al.'s results provide evidence that changes to glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity associated with paediatric obesity increase the risk of developing MS and cardiovascular disease. As such, glucose metabolism and IR should be monitored closely in the young obese population. EJE 155-2 pp 313-319
