Studies aim to preserve insulin
production in Type 1 Diabetes (www.infozine.com,
10 June)
Eighteen medical centres in Europe,
the United States, Canada and Australia
have begun new clinical studies in
type 1 diabetes, the National Institutes
of Health (NIH) revealed this month
at the annual scientific meeting
of the American Diabetes Association.
The NIH-funded studies seek to slow
or stop the immune system's attack
in insulin-producing cells in two
groups of people: those newly diagnosed
with type 1 diabetes and those at
risk of developing it.

Two Seville Doctors Discover The
Gene That Causes The Hereditary Cushing's
Syndrome (Medical News Today, 13
June)
Two Seville-based scientists of
the Molecular Genetics Laboratory
of Virgen Macarena Hospital have
discovered the gene responsible for
the hereditary Cushing's syndrome.
According to the work carried out
by doctors of the University Hospital,
the fault is in the gene of the protein
kinase A of chromosome 17. The mutation
increases the quantity of cortisol
in the blood anomalously, which shows
the first symptoms when boys and
girls reach puberty.. (cont...)

Incidence of GH deficiency - a
nationwide study
Kirstine Stochholm, Claus H Gravholt,
Torben Laursen, Jens O Jørgensen,
Peter Laurberg, Marianne Andersen,
Lars Ø Kristensen, Ulla
Feldt-Rasmussen, Jens S Christiansen,
Morten Frydenberg and Anders Green. Since
the observation of the positive
effect on body composition of growth
hormone (GH) replacement therapy
interest in growth hormone deficiency
(GHD) has grown. The data available
on incidence rates of GHD are currently
very limited. However, this information
is needed to monitor the size and
turnover of the patient populations
that require this expensive and
long-term GH substitution treatment.
Here, Stochholm and colleagues
attempt to set a precedent for
a standardised approach to diagnosis
of GHD, and its precursor - hypopituitarism.
By using uniform criteria to assess
data from national registries and
personal records, these authors
established the incidence rates
of childhood onset (CO) and adult
onset (AO) GHD in the Danish population.
This analysis revealed a significantly
higher incidence of GHD in males
compared with females - a pattern
that has been seen previously in
CO GHD, but not in AO GHD. The
late 80s saw an increase in the
incidence of GHD, probably coinciding
with the availability of recombinant
human GH at that time. The reasons
behind the male bias in GHD diagnoses
are less clear and thus require
further investigation. In this
study Stochholm and colleagues
have established a standardised
approach to assessing the incidence
of GHD nationwide, providing vital
information regarding GH therapy
requirements, revealing gender
biases and highlighting its wide
variety of causes. They therefore
emphasise the need for clinicians
to be aware of the possibility
of GHD in patients with various
syndromes and systemic disorders. EJE

Funding for British-Italian scientific
co-operation
Proposals for scientific co-operation
between research bodies and universities
in the UK and Italy are invited under
the British Council's British-Italian
Partnership Programme. The programme
invites proposals in four specific
subject areas: Food, Nutrition and
Health, which includes obesity, diabetes
and the role of physical education;
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology,
which includes molecular evolution
and ecosystem ecology; Medical Imaging;
and Nanotechnology, specifically
in the biomedical field. The aim
of the programme is to assist young
researchers and build upon newly
established collaboration links.
A preference will be given to projects
that offer research-training opportunities
in the other country. The deadline

Specialised Cooperative Centres
Program In Reproduction And Infertility
Research (NIH)
The National Institute of Child
Health and Human Development (NICHD)
provides funding for a limited number
of research centres in the reproductive
sciences. These centres provide an
arena for multidisciplinary interactions
among basic and clinical scientists
interested in establishing high quality
programs in reproduction and infertility
research. The centres will also serve
as national resources for the training
and career development of new scientists
electing to pursue research in high
priority areas of reproduction and
infertility research. The purpose
of this RFA is to announce the annual
recompetition of the Specialized
Cooperative Centres Program in Reproduction
Research now called the Specialized
Cooperative Centres Program in Reproduction
and Infertility Research. The benefit
of this activity will be to the infertile
couples, their health-care providers,
and the public.

Rimonabant (Acomplia) approved
in EU for treating obesity (Pharma
Times, 22 June)
Acomplia(tm) (rimonabant) has been
approved in the EU for use alongside
diet and exercise in treating overweight
and obese patients who are showing
signs of dyslipidaemia and other
risk factors associated with the
condition. The drug will first be
launched in the UK. The approval
was based on data from the RIO studies
in 6600-patients which found that
rimonabant reduced overall weight
and waist circumference, as well
as having a beneficial effect on
HbA1c, triglycerides and HDL-C. Rimonabant
selectively blocks CB1 receptors
in the brain and other organs that
play an important role in glucose
and fat metabolism.
