A gene predisposing to pituitary tumors identified (University of Helsinki, 26 May 2006)

A recent Finnish study identifies a low-penetrance gene defect which predisposes carriers to intracranial tumors called pituitary adenomas. In particular individuals carrying the gene defect are susceptible to such tumors which secrete growth hormone. Excess of growth hormone results in conditions called acromegaly and gigantism.

Identification of this gene defect using DNA-chip technologies is an example of how genetic research can tackle more and more demanding tasks, such as identification of predisposition genes conferring a low absolute but high relative risk. The results were published in the May 26 issue of the journal Science.

American Endocrine Society publishes Clinical Guidelines

The Endocrine Society has published the first in a series of clinical guidelines in endocrinology created to help physicians based around the world. The first; Evaluation and Treatment of Adult Growth Hormone Deficiency appeared in the May issue of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism and has been followed with Testosterone Therapy in Adult Men with Androgen Deficiency Syndromes in the June issue. Upcoming guidlines will include: Therapeutic Use of Androgens in Women, Prevention and Treatment of Paediatric Obesity, Management of Thyroid Dysfunction During Pregnancy and Postpartum, and The Metabolic Syndrome. Sunscreens: Never 100% protection - Commission consults on product labelling

When we are in the sun, we expose ourselves to two different types of hazardous UV-radiation - UVA and UVB radiation. UVB radiation is the cause for "sun-burn". UVA radiation causes premature skin ageing, interferences with the human immune system, and is an important contributor to the skin-cancer risk. Yet how many people know that the 'sun protection factor' in sunscreens only protects against sunburn (UVB radiation)? The European Commission has launched a public consultation. It intends to use the results of this consultation to publish non-binding guidelines for producers setting minimum standards for sunscreen products and ensure a simple, understandable labelling. The text is available for comments on the Europa website.

Commission study addresses Europe's scientific publication system: DEADLINE EXTENDED

The European Commission has published a study which examines the scientific publication system in Europe and have extended their deadline for feedback to 15th June 2006. The report, drawn up for the Commission by a panel of experts, makes a number of recommendations for future action, including improving access to publicly-funded research. All interested parties are invited to send feedback on the report's findings to the Commission, to provide input for a conference on scientific publication to be held in autumn 2006. You can add your contributions online in SINAPSE by entering the Community on SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS ("Your communities" on the left menu) and the consultation hosted in the "Discussions & surveys" module. PLEASE NOTE: you have to be a member to access this area of the website. Contributions should be sent to rtd-scientific-publication@cec.eu.int by 15th June 2006. SINAPSE, the web interface between the scientific community and Europe's policy-makers, will also host a debate on the subject.

Healthcare utilization, quality of life and patient-reported outcomes during two years of GH replacement therapy in GH-deficient adults - comparison between Sweden, The Netherlands and Germany

Bernhard Saller, Anders F Mattsson, Peter H Kann, Hans P Koppeschaar, Johan Svensson, Marjolein Pompen and Maria Kołtowska-Häggström

The beneficial effects of growth hormone (GH) replacement therapy in hypopituitary adults with GH deficiency are well known. Long-term follow-up of the outcomes of GH replacement therapy, using multinational data, has confirmed that these benefits (improved quality of life (QoL) and reduced utilisation of healthcare) are also not short-lived. But are these patterns representative of all countries, which employ varying types of healthcare system and have diverse patient population characteristics? A single country analysis of Sweden suggests they are. Now, Saller and colleagues assess the effects of GH replacement therapy on QoL and healthcare utilisation over 2 years in three different European Countries - Sweden, The Netherlands and Germany.

Their findings confirm the patterns seen in both the multinational and single country data - QoL improves and is maintained over the course of GH replacement therapy, while the utilisation of healthcare declines. These measures changed to similar extents in all three countries. Improvement in QoL was associated with increased physical activity, patient-reported improvement in health and the reduced need for help in everyday activities. No link was found between reduced healthcare utilisation and improved QoL.

This study presents a useful comparative analysis of the trends in these measures in three distinct European populations, emphasising their reliability and providing an important reference for future socioeconomic evaluations of GH replacement in Western Europe.
