European
Society of Endocrinology membership
The European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) will be launched in January 2006
to replace the European Federation of Endocrine Societies (EFES). The ESE will
have individual memberships and will include all EFES full and affiliated members.
Membership forms will be available on the website from January 2006. For more

EJE seeks new Chief Editor - Deadline 31
January 2006
EJE is looking for a new Chief Editor as
Professor Paolo Beck-Peccoz ends his 8 year
term in 2006. The new Chief Editor will formally
assume responsibility at the end of the year
2006. Applications and nominations should
be made no later than 31 January 2005. Details
on how to do this can be found here: http://www.eje-online.org/preview_misc/chiefeditoradvert.dtl |
New
EJE online system sees huge increase in
downloads
Between October 2004 and October 2005 the
European Journal of Endocrinology’s
website has seen its number of hits increase
more than three-fold. The journal’s
impact factor has also reached an all time
high of 3.140. This improvement on the already
considerable success of EJE online coincides
with its move to HighWire Press, who have
hosted the website since January 2005. These
latest outstanding usage statistics reflect
not only the extensive and ever increasing
use of EJE by the world’s endocrinologists,
but the excellent service provided by HighWire,
both of which are sure to continue.

Association of subclinical hypercortisolism with type 2 diabetes
mellitus: a case-control study in hospitalised
patients
Iacopo Chiodini, Massimo Torlontano, Alfredo Scillitani,
Maura Arosio, Simonetta Bacci, Serio Di Lembo, Paolo
Epaminonda, Giovanni Augello, Riccardo Enrini, Bruno
Ambrosi, Guido Adda and Vincenzo Trischitta.
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) may be sustained by several
endocrine diseases, in particular, overt endogenous
glucocorticoid excess - Cushing’s syndrome.
Although a known cause of hyperglycaemia, Cushing’s
syndrome is of relatively low prevalence, making
it unlikely to be a major frequent contributor
to T2D. More recently, the more common subclinical
hypercortisolism (SH), characterised by impaired
adrenocorticotrophic hormone/cortisol homeostasis,
has been suggested to increase the risk of T2D,
and a high prevalence of SH has been demonstrated
in T2D patients with poor metabolic control. In
this first controlled study on the prevalence of
SH in T2D, Chiodini and colleagues compare T2D
patients and non-diabetic age- and body mass index-matched
controls. Their findings show SH to be nearly 5
times more common in T2D patients than in controls,
independent of obesity and hypertension – the
proportion of T2D statistically attributable to
SH in this population being approximately 7%. Individuals
with SH tend to require insulin treatment more
frequently than those without SH and have a propensity
towards a more severe form of T2D characterised
by the simultaneous presence of hypertension, dyslipideamia
and need for insulin treatment. Chiodini et al.’s
data are confirmatory of previous research suggesting
that diabetics with SH are typified by poor metabolic
control, with the possibility of a cause-effect
relationship between SH and T2D also reinforced
by evidence of reduced glycated haemoglobin in
patients receiving surgical treatment for SH.

Robert
Feulgen Prize 2006
To be awarded for an outstanding achievement in the
field of histochemistry. The contributions may be
either towards the development of new histochemical
and cytochemical techniques or in the application
of existing technology towards solving important
problems in biology and/or medicine. Addressed are
scientists working in microscopical sciences (in
the widest sense) as well as in biochemistry, cell
biology, endocrinology, in situ molecular techniques,
and neurosciences. Scientists in their mid-career
(assistant- or associate professor, Priv. Doz.) are
encouraged to apply.

Grant Program in Diabetes Endocrinology
and Metabolism
The intent of this initiative is to encourage researchers
to apply novel technologies, develop new tools, biomarkers
and model systems, and test innovative concepts of
potential diagnostic and therapeutic relevance to
diseases within their mission including diabetes
and its complications, obesity, endocrine disorders
including osteoporosis, cystic fibrosis and inborn
errors of metabolism. http://www.rdfunding.org.uk/queries/ListGrantDetails.asp?GrantID=7214

Investigator Award
To recognise outstanding investigators in
the early stage of their careers who have
made meritorious contributions to the scientific
area represented by a particular section
of the APS. There are a number of awards

ESF-EMBO
Symposia
Second call for proposals The European Science
Foundation (ESF) is developing a new high-level
Conference Scheme in partnership with national
and international organisations. The new
Scheme will be known as ESF Research Conferences.
Topics will be at the forefront of scientific
research and interdisciplinary when appropriate.
The Scheme will provide the opportunity for
the world’s leading scientists and
other participants, including young researchers,
to meet informally for discussions at the
highest level on the most recent developments
in their fields of research. Furthermore,
it will act as a catalyst for creating new
synergistic contacts throughout Europe and
the rest of the world. http://www.esf.org/esf_genericpage.php?section=10&language=0&genericpage=2283
