Assisting European researchers across the Atlantic
ERA-Link is a network currently being designed with the aim of assisting European researchers working in the United States. The service will provide web and other resources for scientists wishing to develop links with other European researchers working in the US and Europe.

An online survey has been launched to help the European Commission and the European Embassies in Washington understand how the service should be developed to be most useful to researchers working abroad.

You can find the survey at: http://www.evaluationpartnership.com/surveys/eralink.htm

EC aims to promote development of paediatric medicines
More than 50% of the medicines used to treat children have not been specifically tested and authorised for use in children. This means that doctors may not be fully aware of efficacy, dosage and side effects of these drugs in children.

The Commission has proposed a regulation for the research and development of pharmaceuticals specifically designed to meet specific paediatric needs, whilst enabling continuing competitiveness within the pharmaceutical industry. Key elements in the proposal include: a new expert committee within the European Medicines Agency to assess and agree companies’ testing plans; a requirement at the time of marketing authorisation applications for data on the use of the medicine in children; and a reward for studying medicines for children of 6-months extension to the supplementary protection certificate - in effect, six-month patent extension.

The full text of the proposal is available at: http://pharmacos.eudra.org/F2/Paediatrics/index.htm

European Rare Disease Therapeutic Initiative (ERDITI) – call for proposals
Collectively, there are over 6000 rare diseases affecting about 25 million people in Europe. Most do not benefit from efficient treatment. In order to address this problem, through promoting research and developing drugs for the treatment of rare diseases, several European academic institutions and pharmaceutical companies have joined forces in an innovative partnership to facilitate the evaluation of drugs that have been or are being developed by pharmaceutical companies. All non-profit research institutions from European countries and pharmaceutical companies are invited to join ERDITI.

ERDITI has issued a call for proposals intended for European academic scientists working on a rare disease, or a defined group of rare diseases, and who would like access to compounds that have been or are being developed by pharmaceutical companies. Proposals should address the specific evaluation of chosen compounds in vitro or in animal models, based on pharmacological and/or physiopathological hypothesis.

To find out more information, go to: http://www.erditi.org/

Five-year assessment of EU research
The Commission has launched an Independent Assessment Report of recent research programmes. Spanning the period 1999-2003, the review will cover the end of FP5 and the beginning of FP6. The assessment will consider the implementation and evolution of programmes in order to inform future research policy, including helping to shape FP7.

By analysing the achievements of past and current EU activities, the group of 13 leading scientists and engineers from 13 countries will aim to provide evidence-based support to improve the relevance and quality of Community research activities.

The report should be available by November 2004.

Impaired health-related quality of life in Graves' disease. A prospective study

TV Elberling, AK Rasmussen, U Feld-Rasmussen, M Hording, H Perrild and G Waldemar

Copenhagen and Bispebjerg Hospitals, Denmark

European Journal of Endocrinology 151(5) pp549-555
http://www.eje.org/eje/fca/EJE01787.htm

Graves’ thyrotoxicosis can affect patients’ lives for months, and sometimes years, before diagnosis and the symptoms experienced during the acute phase of the disease often persist for up to 6 months after the start of treatment. During this period a patient’s health-related quality of life (HRQOL) might be significantly impaired. In the first prospective study to report on the HRQOL of consecutively referred patients with untreated Graves’ disease without comorbidity, Elberling and co-workers reveal the extent to which the patients’ lives are affected.

Using the Medical Outcome Study 36-item Short-Form Health Status Survey (SF-36) to assess each patient’s HRQOL, Elberling and co-workers report that following diagnosis and treatment the SF-36 scores generally improved but, in some cases, patients’ HRQOL remained impaired even 1 year after the start of treatment. The reduced HRQOL in the acute phase of the disease correlated to depressive and anxiety symptoms. The authors also report that patients in some retrospective studies report long-term neuropsychiatric symptoms despite successful antithyroid treatment.

This progressive study concludes that a clear explanation for patients still experiencing impaired HRQOL after 1 year of treatment remains to be found, and advises that not only thyroid function but also HRQOL should be considered when treating patients with Graves’ disease.
